“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition…present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6 (NIV)
Have you ever wondered why we should pray when God knows everything, when He knows about our present situation, when He knows every detail of our lives and could just meet that need without a word from us?
We need to pray because, firstly, the primary essence of prayer is communion with God. He desires to have a personal relationship with us. He wants to talk with us and have fellowship and intimacy with us. He desires that two-way conversation. From the very beginning, we see that God came down in the Garden of Eden to walk with His creation and to have fellowship. The Creator, the Almighty, came to seek out His creation. It is still the same God today, seeking to have that special and intimate time with us.
Furthermore, Genesis 5:24 tells us that Enoch walked faithfully with God. God wants us to walk and talk with Him. He called Abraham a friend as Abraham prayed to Him. Because of that relationship, God shared with Abraham about his great future. As we pray, God wants to tell us His plans for us also.
In Exodus 33:7-14 we read the account where Moses prepared a place to meet God, which he called a “tent of meeting” (Verse 7). Moses entered this tent (tabernacle), and the Lord descended in a pillar of cloud to speak with him. God wants to talk with us the same way. We need to have that special meeting place where He can hear from us, where He can commune with us. He is waiting for us to enter that secret place of prayer, as recorded in Psalm 91:1.
Brethren, God wants to be near us. James 4:8 (NKJV) says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” How can we draw near without prayer? Talk to Him.
